Consumer Unit Upgrades in Burgess Hill & Haywards Heath

Consumer unit upgrades, explained

DJD Electrical Services Ltd installs and replaces consumer units in Haywards Heath, Burgess Hill and across Mid Sussex. If you are planning an upgrade, we can assess the existing installation and explain the options for your property.

A consumer unit is often called a fuse box. A replacement can improve circuit protection and provide space for future electrical work, but age alone does not mean that every existing unit must be replaced.

Why consider an RCBO consumer unit?

  • Individual circuit protection. An RCBO combines protection against current leaking to earth with protection against overloads and short circuits. Using a separate RCBO for each circuit can help limit disruption if a fault occurs.

  • Surge protection. A surge protection device helps protect connected equipment from brief voltage spikes. We assess the protection needed for your installation and explain what is included in your quote.

  • Room for future plans. Tell us about proposed extensions, electric heating or EV charging so the installation can be assessed as a whole.

  • A clear, tidy installation. Circuit identification and accessible controls make the board easier to understand and use.

Protective devices reduce particular electrical risks; they do not make damaged wiring safe or remove every risk. We assess the condition of the existing circuits before recommending the work.

What does a replacement involve?

  1. Assessment and quotation: we check the existing consumer unit, circuits, earthing and bonding, and explain any additional work identified.

  2. Planning the visit: we agree access and discuss the period when the electricity supply will be off.

  3. Safe isolation: the supply is safely isolated before the replacement work begins.

  4. Installation and remedial work: we fit the new consumer unit and address the agreed defects needed for safe connection.

  5. Inspection and testing: we check the new work and reconnected circuits before handing the installation back.

  6. Certification: we provide an Electrical Installation Certificate and arrange the required Building Regulations notification for notifiable domestic work.

Questions before you book

Will I need a full rewire?
A consumer unit upgrade and a rewire are different jobs. The condition of the wiring determines whether additional work is needed; we will explain what the assessment finds.

How much will it cost?
The number of circuits, existing condition and any remedial work affect the price. Contact us for a quotation based on your installation.

What about a very old fuse box?
Do not disturb suspect old components. Some may contain asbestos-containing materials and need specialist assessment before work proceeds.
